Successful growth and community investment.
Make the connection.
As our Principal Strategic Planner, you will know that planning communities and their infrastructure for people is all about making the right connections. As our Principal Strategic Planner, you’ll strengthen those ties – and create new ones – as you connect families, friends and visitors with businesses and places across our county.
The role
In practice, you’ll collaborate with internal colleagues and external councils to gather the evidence, analysis and insight that helps local planning authorities develop their plans for housing and employment in their areas.
As well as providing our strategic planning expertise, you’ll ensure the team correctly identifies communities’ infrastructure needs with other internal colleagues and expertly manages the use of development contributions earmarked for new school places, local transport library improvements and recycling facilities.
The team
You’ll be a key figure within our creative and collaborative Infrastructure Planning and Place function. As well as managing the development and delivery of our Transport Plan and working with our Borough and District Councils on their Local Plans; this is a team that has secured over £20m to invest in walking and cycling schemes, is running a multi-million pound engagement programme of walking and cycling initiatives, and is working with our Major Projects & Growth team to build the case for Government investment in our major roads and railways that connect East Sussex.
About you
With a relevant degree (or equivalent), you’ll ideally be a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute or working towards qualification. However, it’s your track record that will set you apart. With excellent analytical and communication skills, your proven creative problem-solving and technical planning expertise will help you inspire excellence in everyone you meet and provide the opportunity to make a real difference.
We recognise the benefits of supporting our staff to work flexibly and there are a range of ways in which service delivery and personal commitments can be balanced. We offer staff the opportunity to work in a hybrid way where the nature of their job role makes this possible and in a culture that places value on outputs that drive forward our strategic objectives and benefits our residents. However we also recognise the importance of always retaining a strong sense of belonging and team identity. Additional benefits include a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension scheme, travel discounts, and more. But it’s the chance to create lasting connections across East Sussex you’ll find most attractive here, whilst being part of an excellent and rewarding team that is directly at the heart of driving sustainable economic growth, improving transport connectivity in the county and achieving net zero carbon emissions
We make diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do – our projects, our strategies and our workforce. It’s the only way to ensure our county gets the connections it needs and deserves.
