Casualty Reduction Team - ESCC

At East Sussex County Council, we believe in building a better-connected East Sussex – one that connects people with businesses and places.

The Casualty Reduction Team focuses on crash site history across the county’s road network. We work to implement a programme of measures to address and fundamentally reduce crash sites and casualties. Through effective use of resources, we utilise data led insights to give the broadest understanding of the principles of crash investigation and appropriate mitigating measures.

We want to be realistic about what we’re able to achieve with our resources. Reducing road safety and casualties is a priority for us and everyone that works within the Road Safety team. To achieve out goals we need to understand where and why crashes are occurring. What are the factors involved and how do we streamline resources to maximise our analysis.

Our work

The Road Safety Engineering Team is responsible for the identification of appropriate casualty reduction interventions in line with our statutory duty and agreed priorities and working practices. They are the subject experts on all issues relating to road safety practice and engineering interventions. This includes Road Safety Audit, technical standards, traffic signing, passive safety, and national best practice. They provide advice to our Development Control Team, Highway designers and colleagues in the Infrastructure Planning Team on all aspects of road safety policy and practice.

When the annual road safety programme of work has been agreed they work closely with our Local Traffic and Safety Team to deliver a range of interventions designed to positively contribute to casualty reduction.
