About Us - ESCC

We’re building strong, lasting connections across the county of East Sussex.

Making our roads safer and making East Sussex a better place to live, work and visit.

Make the Connection

Our work touches almost all aspects of county life, and we provide vital services for residents, businesses and visitors across East Sussex. By putting people at the heart of what we do, we’re investing in the health, environment, education, infrastructure, and economy of our local communities. From car users, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians we’re at the forefront of ensuring that people stay safe, and that our communities thrive, grow, and prosper.

Working with us

Road Safety and building better connections isn’t just about projects on our road network– it also applies to how we work with each other. We are a collaborative organisation, full of ideas and innovation, all with a shared goal of helping others and improving lives.

Here are the core principles of life at East Sussex County Council – something we like to call, ‘The East Sussex Way’:

  • We are customer driven and work with our customers to find the best solutions
  • We have clear objectives and deliver great service
  • We take responsibility and do what we say we will
  • We work together as one council
  • We innovate and find better ways of doing things
  • We think it’s important to trust and empower our staff to use their judgement and we try not to put bureaucracy in their way. We also strive for equality of opportunity in all aspects of work, see Equality and Diversity at the Council

Living in East Sussex

East Sussex has it all. Not only is the countryside beautiful and largely unspoilt, but our coastlines, towns and villages are vibrant and inviting. Set in a dynamic Area of Outstanding National Beauty, there’s a wide variety of urban and rural settings in both coastal and inland locations in which to live.

Flexible working

We support a range of working hours and patterns, both full and part-time. For some roles our flexi-time scheme allows you to balance the requirements of your working day with other commitments by giving you the opportunity to make some choices about when you start, finish and take lunch. Your working time each week is likely to include a combination of remote working as well as spending time in an office. Wherever you’re working we’ll make sure you always feel part of the team and that you have the right equipment and support to do your job well.

Health and wellbeing

We have an open, positive approach to health and wellbeing underpinned by a strategy and a clear understanding of the fundamental importance of investing in the wellbeing of our workforce.

You can take part in webinars, workshops, and training courses to help you broaden your mind and see things from new perspectives. We hold regular events to raise awareness of important issues and to share experiences with each other in a safe and comfortable environment.

We have an active network of qualified mental health First Aiders right across the Council which is growing all the time and we give managers the right training and guidance to better support their team. Financial wellbeing support and education is available, and you can access counselling through our Employee Assistance Programme.

We also offer guided meditation and mindfulness sessions, and organised sport activities like football, Pilates, and stoolball.
